James Huskey arrived in Sevier County, Tennessee in 1805. He then moved to Perry County, Alabama in the fall of 1816. He sold his farm (9 miles from Mobile Alabama) and relocated to Illinois, alone, in 1832 and then he returned to Alabama and brought his wife and 10 children back to Illinois with him by wagon train in March, 1834. That spring of 1834 he settled on Section 5 near the residence of Thomas Joiner. He built the first brick house in the area opposite Thomas Joiner’s House. James had the bricks made there at his own farm. In 1836, James had  the Methodist church building built on his a section of his property. The neighbors provided the pews. At one time there was a large membership at this church. The building was also used as the school.

Between the years 1834 and 1840 James Huskey purchased 1,617.26 acres in Bird Township, Macoupin County, Illinois and 601.02 acres in South Palmyra Township, Macoupin County, Illinois. The latter was mostly purchased during the years 1834 and 1835. The land purchases were from the U. S. Government at the rate of $1.25 per acre.
