Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase. Job 8:7
Isaac and Jane Miller Huskey (1772 - 1846)
First settlers of White Oak Flats
now Gatlinburg, Sevier County, Tennessee
Isaac Huskey 22 Jan 1772 - 18 Jul 1846
married ca 1788
Jane Miller ca 1772 - aft 1840
Isaac and Jane were settlers in South Carolina before they came to Sevier County, TN
- On 5 Dec 1796 Isaac Huskey bought 257 acres of land from the state of South Carolina. The land was located in the 'District of Ninety Six in Edgefield County on the waters of Steven's Creek, waters of Savannah River.' It joined the lands of Obediah Henerson, William Anderson, William Rowens and . . . . Mundays.
- On 27 July 1798 Isaac Huskey bought 100 acres of land from Moses Brafford of Edgefield District, South Carolina. This land was situated on 'Rockey Creek, waters of Savannah River' and joined the lands of Jonathan Huskey, Joseph Able, and Wyatt Morris.
- On 6 Dec 1798 Isaac Huskey sold 140 acres of the original 257 acres of land, which he received from the state of South Carolina in 1796, to James Smith of Edgefield District, South Carolina.
- On 15 Nov 1800 Isaac Huskey sold 50 acres of land to Wyatt Morris. This land joined the lands of Peter Huskey, Wyatt Morris, and Jonathan Huskey.
- On 12 Jun 1810 it was recorded that Isaac purchased land in Sevier County for $25.50
Surveyed 24 July 1807
Land grant date: 12 June 1810
The said property is south of French Broad and Holston on the waters of the west fork of Little Pigeon River. The number of acreage is twenty-five and two roods. It joined the vacant land belonging to Richard McBryant in Sevier County, Tennessee.
Isaac Huskey made seven land entries dated from 1 May 1824 through 3 Apr 1835 in the Surveyor's Book N. 1 of Sevier County, Tennessee (Register of Deeds Office). These land entries by Isaac Huskey were located in the area where the Twins Creek picnic area is now, and a part of the Cherokee Orchard and the Sugarlands (all now a part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park). It is has been past down through the years that this is the homeplace where Isaac and his wife Jane Miller lived until their death.
In 1813 Isaac Huskey and his son, James Huskey, signed a petition to the General Assemby of Tennessee from the French Broad and Holston Country. (The original petition is in Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, TN.)
From the GUARDIANS, EXECUTORS & ADMINISTRATORS Settlement Book for Sevier County, Tennessee, there is a record of settlement of the estate of Isaac Huskey. Evidently William Huskey was appointed as administrator by County Court in late 1840's. He continued to handle the affairs of his father's estate until 28 Feb 1860, last recorded entry before William Huskey's death in 1861. From the aforesaid book, there is a list of the heirs of Isaac Huskey who had not received their shares from the estate. They are listed in this order: 'Peter Huskey's Share, James Huskey's Share, Isaac Huskey's Share, Joshua Reagan's Share, and Silas Huskey's Share.' They were living out west (Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas) at that time.

Something to consider: This is a very disputed relationship!
Isaac and Jane came to Sevier County with Isaac's sister Martha Huskey Ogle in the early 1800's. Many people have been lead to believe that Martha was Isaac's aunt, but a document for a Cherokee Application for Citizenship says that Isaac is Martha's "Patsy" brother. The application is for Noah L. Ogle, gg-grandson of Martha "Patsy" Huskey Ogle.

Affidavit
Personally appeared before me JP Price a Notary Public for said county & state, F. L. Emert age 77 years old, a resident of Emerts Cove, Sevier County Tennessee.
In the matter of application of citizenship in the Cherokee Nation of Indians who being duly sworn states as follows
I was acquainted with Isaac Husky Sr. some fifty or fifty five years ago. I had a conversation with him about his blood. His statements were that he was one fourth Cherokee Indian Blood. I have frequently conversed with some of his sons, Albert & William Huskey and perhaps others. They admitted that the statement made by their father was correct.
I also heard William Whaley about thirty or forty years ago. He stated that his wife's mother was one fourth Cherokee Indian Blood.
Isaac Sr. also stated to me that his Grand Parents were Mill?s
I have been acquainted with the Huskey & Whaley for about sixty years. They do not deny the Indian Blood and my Judgment is that from their appearance they are of the Indian Race of People or have Indian Blood in them. Fred L. Emert

Hello! I am married to a Huskey - Devil Bill is Darry's 4rth great grandfather. Do we know how he got that name?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this, it's amazing!
No, I don't know of anyone who knows. I've been asked several times.
ReplyDeleteHello, am the grand-daughter of Rosa Lee Huskey. Her parents were George Washington Huskey and Mary (McDaniel)Huskey. (This being Summerville,MO.) But this is the Huskey family line from Sevierville. I'm trying to find out about Mary. All we have is a marriage license that said she was a ward of Alonzo Helm and Eliza Jane(Huskey) Helm. Mary's birth date is 1875. ( also Missouri ). Somehow I think there's a TN connection but we are stuck. All birth and death records for Mary burned in a courthouse fire. Appreciate any leads you may have, thanks! Great work and thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMy maternal grandfather was Joseph Messer. His mother was Louthenia Caldonia Whaley. Louthenia's father was Preston Whaley. Preston's mother was Mary Ann Ogle. Mary Ann's mother was Martha Jane Huskey Ogle. All my life I have been told we had Cherokee heritage. This was very helpful. Thank you.
